Welcome to my weather page! My name is Ken. I am a photographer, tech nerd, and I have a full-time job in a manufacturing facility. I cover weather events in the NWI region, specifically these counties in Indiana: Lake, Newton, Porter, Jasper, La Porte, Starke, and Pulaski. I am a trained spotter and am not a licensed meteorologist, but I have been studying tornadoes and weather since I was in elementary school.
I use several tools, including: COD Meteorology, RadarOmega, RadarScope, NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center, US National Weather Service Chicago Illinois radar & forecasts.
I was temporarily involved in Porter County Storm Intercept Team PCSIT, and I did (for a real short season) have team members.
This page (as well as ALL social media sites) should NEVER be your primary means to receive weather alerts! Weather radios, cell phones, and AM/FM radios are your best resource for that. I am primarily interested in gathering footage and taking pictures (my photography page is Ken Marquardt Photography) and sharing updates here.
IN CASE OF WEATHER EVENTS -
* Have your RELIABLE means of receiving alerts (cell phone, weather radio, etc.) charged and with notifications on.
* Social media should not be the primary means to receive alerts.
* Have a plan for if it hits the fan! Crawl space, basement are best options. Center room of a sturdy home, away from windows or outside walls. If neither are an option and you don't have a designated storm shelter, find the nearest building you know of that has a central room or bathroom or something that's brick, and be away from windows and outside walls. No matter where you plan to go - cover your head as beat as you can. More people get injured from wind-thrown debris and hail than they ever do from the tornado/winds.
* Now is the time to know your plan. Not after the severe thunderstorm warnings/tornado warnings begin!
